Server security -- making Exchange server public? - 5.Nov.2001 8:57:00 PM

I work for a small corporation of about 400 people. Up to now, my Exchange server has been available only from within the corporate offices. Within the next two months however, I've been instructed to make it available to employees from home.

I have a hardware firewall that has an available DMZ port where I will be putting the Exchange server.

My question is not how to do this, but rather what are my security concerns in doing so?

There may be serious security issues related to deploying web access to Exchange. There are potential problems related to network architecture, logout vulnerabilities, authentication and encryption problems, and underlying server vulnerabilities.

You should check out the document available at:
http://www.whalecommunications.com/fr_0300015.htm

which describes in detail various security issues surrounding deploying web access to Exchange. You can also look at the following Microsoft web page:
