I granted access to a range of internal addresses on the Relay Restrictions screen. After doing so, my Exchange server showed as being an open relay (as tested by my ISP). Removing the access fixed the problem. Why would allowing relaying through the virutal SMTP server for internal addresses allow relaying from outside addresses? What am I missing? Please help!

How are you configuring internal relaying?

If you are setting the IP addresses, be very careful how you set the subnet mask.

Do not configure relaying anywhere else other than the default SMTP VS - relaying (only the list below).
