SMTP Relays - 29.Oct.2003 10:27:00 AM

I have some problems on SMTP Relays, Mail Forwarding and Virus Scanning the forwarded emails. Please help me solve these problems.

Case 1:
Relaying mails through an SMTP Server (Server acting as a SMTP Gateway). SMTP Server can be Exchange or Imail Server etc..
Assumption - no Anti Virus software is installed on the Gateway

Can a message with a virus infect the SMTP Gateway?.
If we save all messages in the SMTP Gateway and if we donÆt open the mails on that server can the infected files affect the computer or spread to other computers? (I donÆt think this is possible but would want to double check with you)
Is there a difference between how Imail works and Exchange works on this scenario?

Case 2:
Forwarding emails to another external SMTP Recipient in Exchange 2000.

I can understand how normal emails are scanned for viruses. But I have some questions when its just a forward to an external SMTP address.
How does this forwarding happen? Does the Information Store accept the mail and then forward? Is it forwarded as soon as the SMTP server accepts the email?. How does the Anti Virus Software come in to play when forwarding (Scanmail, Mcafe etc..)?

Thanks in advance,
