Messages with Attachments not dispayed in OWA - 1.Mar.2004 9:04:00 PM

I have run into an issue today that is quite frankly baffling

We're running Exchange 2000 SP3 on a Win2K SP3 with post SP-3 Hotfixes
cluster server, in a front end/back end configuration.

One user accesses his Inbox over the web, & is missing
all the documents that contain attachments. They're just
plain & simply not in his Inbox. They ARE visible,
however, in his Exchange/MS Outlook Inbox.

He sees the same thing from any computer, regardless of
operating system or browser. Addiditionally if he sends an email to
himself it can be opened in sent items including the attachment, but
it is never seen in the Inbox (in OWA) the number indication that
there is a new messge is incremented correctly in Outlook and OWA

No one else is having this problem that I know of.

I've done a lot of testing with differnet accounts and machines its
only his account that seems to have the issue.

I've got to conclude that it's specific to his Inbox, but
I can't pinpoint it beyond that.

Does anyone have any idea hat the heck is going on?

hi,

do you use the iis lockdowntool?
or simply the urlscan tool

in the urlscan.ini file there you can determind what type of attachments will by displayed!

Thanks for the response, but if that were the issue wouldn't all of the mailboxes be affected?

I did check anyway and no urlscan.ini on the box (it is a cluster if that makes any difference)and not using the lockdown tool.

Mailbox has not been moved recently and the same results occur when accessing it through the front end or back-end directly. This is only as far as I know for one user in the store.

The message is displayed correctly in Outlook no issues whatsoever, in OWA the message is not there at all, not just the attachment - any
message that contains an attachment does not appear at all in OWA, its really odd let me see if I can give a better example.

Inbox example as displayed in Outlook
Message 1 from Kurt no attachment
Message 2 from Kurt with attachment
Message 3 from Kurt no attachment
Message 4 from Kurt with attachment
Message 5 from Kurt no attachment

When you look at the same inbox in OWA either through the front end or
directly at the back-end

Inbox example as dispplayed in OWA
Message 1 from Kurt no attachment
Message 3 from Kurt no attachment
Message 5 from Kurt no attachment

Thanks again for any response

No one has seen this huh? As an FYI I moved the mailbox to another store on the same server and still have the same issues. I may try another server as well

I am experienced the same problem in Outlook web access. As a temp work around , I have discovered (for our setup) that i can zip the attachments, and then you can access through OWA. This is of course a work around, i will look at the exchange settings later to see what is going on. I think Exchange is some how bloking some file types.

You may want to check out this KB article 827637 on Microsoft.

I had a techician call me today with a user experiencing the same problem that Kurt described above - the user could not see any messages that contained attachments, when viewing his mailbox in OWA. All of his other messages displayed in OWA. In Outlook 2003, he could see all of the messages.

We tried accessing the mailbox using OWA from several systems, with the same results. I saw this message here, which sounded similar and gave me the clue to a solution: http://forums.msexchange.org/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=9;t=001197

The solution for us was to change the "View" in OWA to something other than "Messages", refresh the window, and then change it back to "Messages" and refresh again. After doing this, all of the messages (including those with attachments) display properly in OWA.

I haven't been able to find any other references to explain this behaviour, on the MS KB or anywhere else. Very odd. None of our other 700+ users have experienced this, to my knowledge.

Mailbox Server (back-end): Ex2000 Enterprise w/SP3 and the Aug. 2004 Post-SP3 Rollup, running on Win2K Enterprise with SP4 and all critical OS patches through 10/15/04
OWA Server (front-end): Ex2000 Enterprise w/SP3 and the Aug. 2004 Post-SP3 Rollup, running on Win2K Enterprise with SP4 and all critical OS patches through 4/12/05 (was just patched last week)
