I've looked through several OWA and SSL tutorials and I'm a little unsure whether I need to purchase a certificate or not. I'm using Windows 2000 and Exchange 2000 and I am looking to setup SSL so that OWA is secure. Can I not generate the certificate within windows and then install it on the client that will be using OWA?

Thanks.

You are very very close to your answer. It's posted on this site under the 2003 article.
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/SSL_Enabling_OWA_2003.html

It works basically the same with 2000. I'm using it and all my users are using it.

Hi ,

I have applied the same steps for my Windows 2000 / Exchange 2000 domain .

Previously , I was able to access the mail box by just using

http://mailserver

even without the \exchange option .

Now this URL displays a message saying

The page must be viewed over a secure channel

requesting the

https://mailserver

It then shows the security alert about the certificate , I click yes to proceed and then the following error appears :

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

From the Internet , a blank page appears after accepting the alert message !

The security certificate is already issued as can be seen from the Certificate Manager !

What could possibly be wrong with my setup ?

Regards

I have been struggling with setting up SSL for our OWA. I tried to generate certificates and always got very close to having it work, but never 100%.

I decided to purchase a certificate from freessl.com for $99

They have very clear online instructions and you get live support for that price as well.

The SSL is working well now, my users never get prompted about certificates which is great.

Just wanted to give you another option.
