I installed Small Business Server 2000 w/Exchange. I have a 18 G hard drive. I partitioned 4G for the OS and then the other 14 G was going to be for my data. During the install my Exchange defaulted to the 4G partition which has my system files. I want to move my mailboxes and my storage groups over to the 14 G partition. I already attempted to move my data by changing my property. This was unsuccessful. During the move it changed my system boot files and my system crashed with an error "NTLDR is missing" I tried the fix of making a boot disket with NTLDR, NTDETECT.com, and BOOT.ini. However, it was unsuccessful . I searched support articles but did not succeed. While I was changing the properties of the data and stores it told me to perform a full backup after I rebooted, but I do not have a tape backup or writable CD on the system. How do I successfully move my mailbox data and my storage groups for my public folders over to the larger partition?

Did you try to change the pat of the edb files from the first storage group properties? If you did and fail, create a new storage group, in the bigger partition, and move the mailboxes from one storage group to another from the exchange tasks. Then you can dismount the primary storage group.

Actually, I'm having the same problem. However, since it is SBS2000, you are only allowed one message store with the standard version of Exchange that comes with SBS. Does anyone have any other suggestions other than buying the Enterprise version? Thanks, Guy

To move .edb and .stm files (your databases, of which there are 4, priv1.edb, priv1.stm, pub1.edb, pub1.stm) right click on Storage Group and go to Database Tab, on Mailbox Store and Public Store too. I don't have e2k in front of me.... That will move your logs and databases to other drive.

Whatever, I am very hesitant to proceed because I was burned previously with moving a storage group to mailboxes and public folders to a different partition. The server was SBS 2000 Exchange SP1. I changed the path of the storage group to the new partition. I was warned that at the completion I was going to restart server and perform a restore. I blindly clicked through the messages. After the restart I had a black screen telling me my NTLDR was missing. Out of much frustration and little success in correcting the problem. Here I am again with a similar situation, and I want to do this one right. I would appreciate some specific instructions on backup Exchange and moving the storage group for the public folders and the mailboxes to the D: partition that is not the system partition.
Thanks for your expertise

To backup:
1. stop Information Store Service, then copy priv1, pub1.edb and priv1, pub1.stm to a safe location.
2. rename \mdbdata to \mdbdataold, create new blank \mdbdata directory. If you have other \mdbdata directories spread over other drives, make sure there are no files in them. Start IS Service, go to ESM, right click Mailbox and Public Stores and select "mount," which will mount blank Stores. Then move them:
a. to move log path, right click Storage Group-->Properties--> Browse on Transaction Log Files and System Path Location and move them to d:\exchsrvr\mdbdata
b. to move databases, right click Mailbox and Public Folder Stores--> Properties-->Database-->Browse on Exchange Databases and Exchange Streaming Database and move them to d:\exchsrvr\mdbdata
After moving blank databases to D, you can stop IS Service, thereby dismounting blank Stores, then remove ALL files from ALL \mdbdata directories and move/copy your production databases to D, priv1, pub1.edb, priv1, pub1.stm to d:\exchsrvr\mdbdata. Those should be the only files in \mdbdata. Then start IS Service, Stores should mount.
To prevent mail from going into blank databases while your moving, stop SMTP Service. Do it during off hrs, try to kick everyone off server.
