I'd like to use public folders for newgroup-like posting functionality.  However, my concern is that postings don't trigger the same notifications you get for emails (play a sound, envelope indicator in the sys tray, temporary popups, etc..).  It seems that unless the folder is specifically visible in the Outlook UI, you have no way of knowing a new post arrived.  I don't want to trigger an email forward since in this case the whole idea is to reduce email.

Is there any way to get better notification for postings (like emails have)?

TIA, Clark

You'll need 3rd party tools as far as I know, such as those listed here:

Of course, one other less functional option is to drag the public folders to your Favorites in Outlook, which then shows an unread message count within the public folders.

I had tried that, but that Favorites pane is still out-of-site when sitting in the Mail pane (which is where users most frequently are).

I did find a decent solution here

The Favorite Folders pane IS visible when in the Mail pane.

Thanks, Clark
