Is there really a need to recover the OST? This is only the cached mailbox information and contains the contents of the mailbox at the time it was last synchronized. Is it significantly different that what is on the server now?

How critical is this? What state is your backups in, and what type of backups do you perform (Infostore / Brick-level)? I can guess how this situation arose as I have had similar issues in the past. Those experiences have forced changes to my Exchange environments in terms of backups and archival. This is another way of saying you might be out of luck.
I am also interested in Arne's question - what size is the .OST file?
Does the user's mailbox still exist, or was it deleted? If deleted, how long ago?

Hi,
Are you able to open OL in Offline mode? If yes then probably you can use OL to create PST and move mails from OST to PST.
Moving forward to this issue. Please make sure you configure OL in cached mode. Now the question here comes is why even after being in cached mode .OST does'nt work.
Configuring OL in cached mode is not the only option available for recovery in the future.
You have to configure OL to work in OFFLINE mode as well. This will help you to recover data even if the exchange server is completely crashed.
Hope you plan such disasterrecovery options from now onwards..

After reading the information you provided I have come to the decision that you have an orphaned .ost file from which you want to recover your old emails, notes, contacts, etc. I completely understand the situation and good thing to know for you is .ost can be successfully converted into .pst with the help of Outlook OST Repair software.

OST file contains all the mailbox data at the time of last synchronization. If it is necessary to access that data you have to convert ost to pst file using third party ost to pst conversion software.
