I am trying to configure outlook anyhwere on my exchange server to work outside of our building with some of our people. I have run through some configuration and I think I have it up and running, but I am not sure. Do I need to open any ports on my firewall for it to work? Any hints would be helpful.

Usually not since it uses http. If you have a certificate on the Exchange server, you'll need to browse to the OWA interface and install the cert before Outlook anywhere will work. The biggest and most commonly fudged issue is with the URL's. The first one is your ex: exchange1.domain.local the next is domain.com the next is msstd:domain.com Basic authentication is good. I use it for everyone in our organization as they all travel, and it is excellent. There are a few known issues with the certs not being accepted and the user being prompted repeatedly to sign in. If this occurs, simply delete that Outlook anywhere profile under the mail icon in control panel, and start over. You may also have to delete the imported certificate through the .mmc (certs) and reimport it. I just completed an Exchange 2007 class, and it even happened in the class to random students and they finaly had success by repeating the above steps.

Now, when I enter the data for the cert do I have to include the msstd and when you say delete the cert, do I have to do it on the server side or client side.

I have a few more questions for you. I am able to connect throught the outlook anywhere internally, which connects through HTTPS and thats how I know I am able to connect internally. But when I get external it is unable to connect to the exchange server. Now, for the HTTPS iin the configuration of outlook, I have my internal address, which is exchange1.domain.com. My OWA works fine and I have an external address assinged to that which is just an IP address right now. It doesn't have anything tied to it like, mail.comapny.com. When I enter the Ip address into the HTTPS field in outlook it still won't connect externally. I should be able to use the same ip that I connect to the OWA and I should be able to then connect with that IP through outlook anywhere. If you have any thoughts, please let me know.

the cert is stored in e trusted root certificate folder on the clien machine so at run command, enter mmc and add the cert snap in and expand the certificates and look for the one for your server and delete it. Re install using /owa interface and store in Trusted Root Certificates
