We are in the process of upgrading from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange2000. We are going to wind up with 2 Exchange2000 servers, half of our users on one and half on the other. My question is, how will OWA, Exchange2000, etc, know which server to send a user to when accessing their e-mail using OWA from the web? Will OWA look in Active Dir for the info and just send the user to the appropriate server? I need to know before I get there.

thanks already, tom

Dedicate one the the servers as Front-end server.

Note:
Dedicating an Exchange 2000 server as Front-end requires the Enterprise version.

If they are in the same routing group, you should not have a problem. It is no different than when they were in the same site when using 5.5.

Thanks for the reply.
Do you have an article that would explain this to me? Routing groups, Administrative groups, etc.. Thanks already, tom

Check below section over at Slipstick for good resources on OWA deployments:

Routing groups are used to determine how mail gets routed between an Exchange organization with multiple sites.

Administrative groups are used to delegate administrative control over groups of servers.

As long as the servers are in the same Routing Group, it doesn't matter how many servers you have. Exchange will take care of it.

A good test of this would be to set up Outlook on a machine. Enter the user's username, and type the wrong Exchange server name in the server field. As long as the name you type is a valid Exchange server, Exchange will do the server name resolution and direct you to the appropriate server.
