I am currently installing a Exchange 2007 server. We currently also have a Linux based QMail POP/SMTP server. We have a LOT (and I mean a lot) of automated programs that use the current POP/SMTP server to send/retrieve e-mails to/from customers. Think of thinks like automated status updates and the like for jobs that we do for our customers. Now I want to basically move everyone that is a "living body" over to exchange 2007, but leave the automated processed in place on the POP/SMTP server. We are using this POP/SMTP server as relay (the server is in-house) for the exchange server. We also want to gradually convert the users over (over a few weeks time) because of limited staff, time, money etc to do it all on a sunday. The problem I am finding is when I convert a user over (so far I have only done a test user), that sending/receiving mail works fine, but when I try to send an e-mail to someone that is not yet converted, OR to one of the automated e-mail systems, the Exchange server tells me it cannot deliver it because the account does not exist on the Exchange server. This makes perfect sense of course. What i want however is that Exchange 2007 doesn't give up at that point, but forwards the mail on to the SMTP/POP server to see if the account exists there. In a nutshell: maarten@mycompany.com --> someone@internet.com - works! someone@internet.com ---> maarten@mycompany.com - works! maarten@mycompany.com --> pete@mycompany.com - works ONLY if pete is already on exchange. What I had in mind was to ONLY create the accounts when they actually migrate over to Exchange, so that the Exchange server would relay the message to pete@mycompany.com to our POP server, and deliver it to a POP box so that migrated users can still e-mail pete without getting an error. I figured I would need to setup some sort of routing.... For the record: right now the MX record points to our QMail server. Can this be done, or am I confusing everyone with my noob questions?
