i have a customer that bought small business server 2003 r2. they ask me to get it set up and there 4 laptops so that server could do backups. there email is host else where and they use outlook and pop3 to pick up there email.
my question is do i need to install anti virus software on this server? if so any recommendation? if so do i need to exclude any files or folder from the scanner?
they currently use AVG on the 4 laptops.

if they had called me before buying this i do not think i would have recommend so much server for 4 laptops.
and as i read more and more i fell like i may be beyound my skills with anti virus on this type of server, (first time dealing with exchange)
thanks
richard

Hi Richard,

what is the server been used for? ie. Is it only running backups or is it also been used as a data/file/mail store?

it is being used mainly as a backup server. my documents have been redirected and can be used off line, (sbs set this up).
they pick up there mail with outlook 2003 but use pop3 to get it from a outside host. what i do not know right now is a local pst file is keeping all the outlook or if outlook is using the exchange server to store the emails. (this will be another question later).
let me know if you need more info

I'm not sure how important the data is to your client... What value they place on it.

I always recommend my clients use an anti virus and firewall; especially if e-mails are involved or remote users might use a system for personal use. I.e. Inserting removable media.

Here are a few AV systems worth looking at;_

thanks i have been looking at AVG and nod32 for file level scanning. i did read a microsoft tech note that they did not recommend running file level anti virus on there servers. i also found a list of directors that should be exclded from scanning.
