Hi all,
I am new to exchange server 2010 & have very little idea about mail flow.
Pls read the scenario and help…
We are using qmail mail server (managed by carizen) in our premises with domain: mydomain.com and mail flow is fine, now we are migrating from qmail to exchange server 2010, to test the working of exchange server we disconnected the qmail server for testing the mail flow, while sending emails all mail were queued in exchange server but when we started the qmail in parallel then all mails from exchange delivered to destination without any trouble and same is the case with receiving. Queried ISP and found these details.
Domain: mydomain.com (example)
Static IP: 123.234.234.123 (example)
ptr: 123.234.234.123.in-addr.arpa. 43200 IN PTR webmail.mydomain.com
Also when we changed the send connector smart ip: 123.234.234.123 to Mx record (no address was mentioned) all mails were send to destination (qmail was not running parallel in this case) same happens in receiving case. Pls suggest as it is very urgent and important…seeking help from experienced seniors… 

Exchange sends outgoing mail using a Send Connector. It sounds to me like the Send Connector was originally configured to use the Qmail server as the smart host for all outgoing mail. Therefore once the Qmail server was shut down it could not send outgoing mail.

Changing the Send Connector to use DNS for outgoing mail routing means it will look up the MX records of the external recipient's domain and send the mail directly to them, instead of sending via a smart host.

Does that help clear things up for you?

Paul,

Does that mean that the Exchange server hosting the Send Connector (Hub or Edge) needs access through the firewall on port 25?

Yes, that is correct.
