hello,

I have an exchange 2003 server (fully patched) with a connector set up for outbound mail to go to a smarthost (postini).  This has been set up this way for quite sometime and we have not had any problems with it.  All inbound is currently working fine, and all outbound except to eskimo.com is working.

We receive this error

     support@eskimo.com on 7/1/2008 9:38 AM
           You do not have permission to send to this recipient.  For assistance, contact your system administrator.
           <mail.domain.com #5.7.1 smtp;550 5.7.1 <support@eskimo.com>... Access denied>

This occurs from any account we try to send from or to at eskimo.  I am even able to duplicate this error from the exchange administrator account.

Exchange message tracking shows that the message was bounced from the server itself, and to verify, I checked logs at postini, and the message definitely did not make it there.

What settings in exchange should I check to see if there are any restrictions for this domain?

What happens if you use telnet to test sending a message directly to the recipient (bypassing Postini)?

Are you sure that domain isn't configured in your Exchange Organization or at Postini?

I just tried manually telnetting to eskimo.com from the exchange server and the recipient server said it accepted the message and placed it in the queue.  Then I ran smtpdiag using my email address and support@eskimo.com and smtp diag said everyhting was successful.  I sent another message from my outlook client, and it failed with the same error.

exchange message tracking says:
    SMTP:message routed and queued for remote delivery
    SMTP:started Outbound Transfer of message
    SMTP:Non-delivery report (NDR_ Generated

I don't even think the message is getting to postini, but if I send to any other domain, I don't have a problem. 

Where should I look in Exchange to see if it is configured?

The NDR comes from your server because it's the communication between your server and its intended destination that's failing.  Since you can communicate directly to the recipient system, Exchange doesn't appear to be sending it there.

Check your SMTP log to see to what Exchange is attempting to communicate, and what responses it is getting.

Is the address  x.x.x.x  one of your servers, or the recipient system?

oh, good point!!  i didn't even think about that.  That ip address belongs to postini. 

So, does that mean that my exch server is trying to send the message to postini, and postini is kicking back the 550 error?

The weird thing though is that when postini creates an error message, they append "-psmtp" to the end of their error messages.

Correct.

Try sending the message again using Telnet, but this time instead telnet to the Postini IP address.  Hopefully you'll get a more informative rejection response when you issue the RCPT TO:support@eskimo.com command.

Well, that's definitely the problem!  Thank you for narrowing it down.  I just ran through the postini console, and I am not blocking anything outbound.  I guess I'll give postini a call and have them fix it.

I haven't run into that situation with Postini before, so I'd appreciate it if you'd post the resolution.
