I have a customer on SBS2011 (exchange 2010) with the domain abc.com

They were taken over by another company and need to send emails from def.com

The def.com domain has a mail server shared by other businesses external to the abc company.

I added def.com to the allowed domains on the SBS server and they can send mail from def.com - no problems.

Except they can't send emails to any external users with an email address @def.com (address does not exist)

Any ideas about how to solve this? Or another way to configure the server at abc?

Thanks in advance.

Probably ABC is sending emails though def.com server. Try creating a subdomain under def.com like abc.def.com, list abc.def.com as some super low MX record priority mail server for def.com (say priority 100) and then send mail directly from abc.def.com server without it going into def.com . I hope my suggestion makes ense :)
