I've been using a smart host connector for 2 years. I tried to shift to DNS routing, but the mail doesn't go out. When I shift back to the smart host, it immediately starts working. I need to move ISPs and the new ISP doesn't allow the use of a smart host. reverse DNS is Ok. The original decision to us the smart host was because DNS never worked for this Exchange server. Please have a read of my blog article and check you are RFC compliant, not blacklisted, your FQDN is correct (not ending in .local too) and if you want, ping me a test email to Alan @ it-eye.co.uk and I'll tell you what's wrong.
