Hi there

I just wonder if I can specify two smarthosts on SMTP virtual server? If so - do I have to separate them anyhow or do I just type like [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx][yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy] ? Thanks a lot in advance !!

best regards

Kent

Never set a smart host on the SMTP virtual server. Leave that blank.
If you need to use a smart host then set it on an SMTP Connector. On the SMTP connector you can put in additional smart hosts and they will be used in a round robin method.

First, please heed Simon's advice.  The virtual server is not the place for smarthosts.

Second, the format is square brackets around each IP address and commas as delimiters between each IP address entry.

In other words:   [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx],[yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy]

It isn't used by Exchange. It is used when SMTP is used as part of a pure IIS machine. The smart host option is a hang over from that. As far as I am aware there is no legitimate reason to use the smart host option on an Exchange server.

Exchange Admin job security?

While it certainly can be used, it's better to configure your routing using SMTP connectors.  It's easier to understand, modify, and troubleshoot.  There are circumstances where you have to configure things with SMTP virtual servers, but until you actually encounter a situation where you can't do what you need with SMTP connectors, it's probably not worth researching.

If you really need to know, I'd suggest picking up a good book on Exchange.  I personally like Jim McBee's books which you can find on Amazon.
