hi all-

i'm in the process of transitioning over to Ex2007 and have run out of ideas on this one...

occasionally (maybe 1 out of 20+), logging into OWA 2007 is extremely slow.  the initial FBA welcome screen displays immediately, but after entering credentials, it may take 20-100 seconds to authenticate and have the Inbox display.  once in the Inbox, performance is perfectly fine again.

this happens on the LAN and WAN...with and without ISA inbetween, etc.  so, it's somewhere between the CAS and AD i believe.

summary of my config:

load balanced ISA 2006 w/ FBA
two CAS via NLBS
CCR mailbox cluster
legacy Exchange 2003 cluster on Windows 2003
all Exchange 2007 servers are Windows 2008

the frustrating part is there is nothing in any event logs and a comparison of a good and bad logon via packet trace doesn't show much.  what else is there to look for?

thanks for any input!

Check the IIS logs and possible the HTTPErr logs on the CAS box for long running operations or errors that may be hiding there. Possibly compare this to the IIS logs on the MBX server.

Also, make sure your NIC drivers are up-to-date and that TCPChimney is disabled.

The packet trace may at least show what requests/responses (to from whom) are taking a long time.. There may be a performance issue that you just happen to hit at the right time. The IIS logs or network trace should at least show something.
