I have a problem, I am not a net work engineer I am a software developer so please bare that in mind. I have been told to set up a test exchange server to test our software and for bug replication. How can I set up a test exchange server with a different name , site , etc but the same in ever other way to the real exchange server?

If you set it up with different names you will not be able to mount the databases. You would have to create test users with test mailboxes on the new server.

So what route would need to be taken to have a duplicated exchange server to test on?

You need a seperate network setup from the live setup. You will need a DC server, DNS and Exchange. Then you can use same names as before and restore databases to it.

What we did was take the servers down, ghost a copy fo them onto other servers and setup a lab with that. We did it with our DC and Exchange server and it has worked well.

We used to have to have an identical Exchange box on our network for DR. This is how we did it (assuming it is 5.5 you're talking about!)

- Ensure the Server name and IP address are unique.
- Install Exchange, select 'Create new Organisation'
- Name the new organisation exactly the same as your Live org.
- Create a Site with the same name as your Live site.
This will sit side by side, as long as you dont have IMS installed! And the two wont see each other at the Exchange Level.

To get the Mailboxes on, if possible, do an EDB restore to the server from a live servers backup.
