i say that you will not be able to restore exchange from backup even if all other exchange files are on a backup tape except the following files:

exchsrvr\dsadata\dir.edb
exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv.edb
exchsrvr\mdbdata\pub.edb

do i win or lose the bet?

dir.edb is the exchange directory
priv.edb contains all your private folders (mailboxes)
pub.edb contains all your public folders.

in short, those three files ARE the exchange database. Without them you have nothing.

Hard to say whether you win or lose! You really do not "restore" Exchange 5.5. You rebuild [fresh install] and then restore the data. With that data comes the private and public data and the directory information...

You definitely win! In fact, given JUST those files (and knowledge of your Org and Site names) I could restore your exchange server.

Under specific circumstances, you could rebuild the server without those files BUT you'd need to have every transaction log from number 1, wipe the store and recreate and then play the transaction logs up to date and rebuild the directory.

But I'd far rather NOT do it...
