Hi everyone

I have SBS 2003 and Exchange 2003. We have just got some PDA's with Windows mobile 5. Unfortunately it will not let us import our self signed certificate so these cannot access the Exchange server.

I have tried various microsoft knowledgebase articles on how to do this and failed.

We are now looking at getting a proper certificate but I have been told that you need to get a specific type that is supported by Windows Mobile 5.

Can anyone reccommend a CA that is cheap as we are a not for profit organisation and money does not grow on trees.

THanks in advance.

So you have tried to copy your certificate to the device?  This is how I got all of mine to work.  Had to copy the certificate to the mobile device.  then on the moblie device using explorer open the certificate it then warns about it being a unkown certificate just say ok and yes to import.

Go to you OWA, then export the certificate as DER encoded binary. This file you can add to the thrusted list on your WM5 pda.

Depending on the device you may have to change a registry setting on the device before you import the certificate, then change it back again.  Let us know what device you have and if you have had any luck with this.  The next problem is how to ensure you can sync when connected locally (plugged in or WiFi) especially if the certificate name is different as is in my case.

when I go to OWA on the PDA I only get a yes or no option for the certificate.

When I  copy the .cer file from the server I click on it and windows mobile  says "Cannot access certificate"

WHat registry files do I need to change on the PDA?

Not on your pda. Go to OWA on a "regular" windows machine. click on the locksign (that shows it's secure page). Then you can export it as DER type certificate, that you can install on your pda.

Guys,

This is an interesting exchange and has proved usefull for me, i.e. self signed root certificate authorities and intemediate issuing certificate authorities can be imported into WM5.0 if they are in DER encoded binary [*.cer] format (i.e. NOT base64 encode [*.cer] or PKCS#7 encode ([*.p7b]).

So my question is has anyone come up with a WM5.0 native solution to import both the public key certificate and the private key? currently WM5.0 doesn't appear to recognise either p12 or pfx file formats for me.
